In story telling it is a smart idea to tell a story about something you know. This story stems from a simple idea. The synopsis might have read, "I take a selfie and another". It goes for only one minute. Look how much is packed into one minute! One minute is all you need for your project. With a simple, engaging story idea and a short time frame an animator can focus on making their project good.

Value for money.
Value and money. Do they mix?
Thinking and feeling are often erased by dollars and nonsense.
Beancounters, shareholders, alleged 'creative' teams, investors, committees and risk managers; all assigned to tuck the expression of creativity neatly under the bulge of the bell curve. The combination of aversions and blinkers grinds deep furrows, ruts, for artists to stumble toward the mediocre.

Ahh, you're a student. Your work markets the animator, not the other way round.
There is a wonderfilled freedom in being an animation student that is sometimes only noticed in the rearview mirror.
A return to study for skilled animators can yield a lost sense of freedom satisfaction that money can't buy.
It is personally why I think the Gobelins "student" films are so good and why many of us will always be animation students. Even if it's for free using the Internet.
Cordell Barker masterclass online
One of my favourite short films is The Cat Came Back by Cordell Barker (see it HERE). What a beatiful, quirky film - love the shaky linework. Another National Film Board of Canada classic.
You can watch a fascinating masterclass with Cordell Barker HERE. He has some verrry interesting things to say about storytelling, discipline and economy. There is s fascinating comparison between animation with jazz music. Short filmmakers should take note.

THE JOY OF ANIMATION
Recently myself and some of my fellow QUT Education students made a short doco titled THE JOY OF ANIMATION. It profiles four Brisbane-based animators discussing why they love animating. It's not a "how-to-animate" film, but rather it's a celebration of the creative process. Or something.And it stars ARC contributors Ian and Frank, as well as Steve Baker (Tropfest winner) and Jason Lynch (stop-mo genius).

Knight Games
2D and 3D blend in this clasic inspired film from Australian animator Christopher Minos. very nice.
Animation at BIFF!
The Brisbane International Animation Festival is kicking off now, and there are a few sessions that could be of interest to animators.Dennis Tupicoff is a Melbourne-based animator whose short films are national treasures. Films like Darra Dogs, His Mother's Voice and the new film Chainsaw must be seen if you're an Australian with an interest in animation. BIFF is presenting two sessions of his short films. Heavy-going but beautifully made stuff.
The Secret of Kells, the Irish feature I blogged about recently, is part of the program. I'm definitely going to try to catch that one.
Nocturna is a Spanish children's feature that looks quite beautiful.
There are also several short films scattered about the program, mostly teamed up with other films - like The Cat Piano (a great Aussie short narrated by Nick Cave, and more than a little creepy... but then, it IS narrated by Nick cave!) and Slaves (a Danish short that looks pretty depressing!).

Bernard Derriman Article
SBIT students will be familiar with some of the work of Bernard Derriman, like the Arj & Poopy series and (especially) the clip to the TISM song Everyone Has More Sex Than Me (the one with the oh-so-cutesy rabbit). Here's an interesting article about him from The Age newspaper.He's another former Flash animator who's switched over to Toon Boom's Animate Pro... I've been hearing very good things about that program!
Vice Versa
Wow, this is one of the most original pieces I've seen in a while. Love it. The animator Jacques Khori makes some really interesting films.
Monstera Deliciosa - Gobelins, France
Each year the second year animation students at Gobelins in Paris have a project to produce an opening animation for the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. There are more Gobelins short films on their YouTube channel.The Spine - Chris Landreth
Chris Landreth made the Oscar winning short film 'Ryan'. In June 2009 he presented a new film that premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France called 'The Spine'. These clips found at the National Film Board of Canada site. Students from Seneca College in Toronto worked on the film.
Simon's Cat!... er, Sister's Dog
There is something about animal behaviour. It is a great way to reflect on human behaviour. I came across the link to the Simon's Cat YouTube channel via Carlos Baena's blog. If you haven't watched the Simon's Cat animations they are heartily recommended, "A series of beautifully animated shorts, at the heart of the humor is fantastic observation." (Ian Lacey, August 2008).
