After much hype and anticipation this multi award winning student film from Gobilins is legitimately up on the net. Definitely a cut above your average student film.
Anyone know just how long a Gobelins course is? And how many students are involved? From how many different disciplines? Because films from this school look like no other student films in the whole world!
The three year program builds on the traditional curriculum, providing the students the opportunity to work with both traditional (hand-drawn) and digital techniques for animation, while at the same time nuturing their creative edge... This 3 year animation artist program is open to young adults between 18 and 26 years of age who wish to acquire the multiple skills needed in making animation films. Throughout the three year program, the students do internships during the holiday periods in animation studios and production companies. It should be noted that the third year program is devoted to classes and exercises to perfect 3D character animation skills (September through November) and to the making of a short film in teams (December through June) using whatever methods or techniques the project requires (2D, digital, 3D…).
Also an example of why students should make their film as a team, as in industry, although I know of no other course run this way. I'll bet that the teacher directs, (or damn nearly,) or else Gobelins films would not be so reliably good every year. Film making may be a collaborative exercise, but a democracy it ain't.
I bet the direction from a teacher is very heavy handed. There are common themes in the films. One of the most obvious is the fast paces chase sequence.

It's a good example why the Southbank course should be extended into a third year.

Not that I'm putting down the efort of the students. They do some amazing work.
