This is a beautifully crafted short film, made by the animation director of "Waltz With Bashir". SBIT animation students should recognise some of the Flash tricks that the filmmaker has used, especially the beloved 2.5d technique!

I'm not a political animal and so I'm not making any comments on the film's message... but boy, it is a gorgeous little film that seems to me to have it's heart in the right place.
Click HERE to see the film. Note that there's also a short MAKING OF doco at the bottom of the page.

I think animating a story that means something to an animator may bring out the best skills in an animator.

I wonder if that is true?

Let's say, as compared to animating an advertisement for some junk drink or junk food, where you just have to do enough to fet the boardroom nod and the payment.

Don't know if I'm with ya there Franko. This may be true of a hobby, but I think a professional should be able to turn their skills upon any matter and within it find inspiration and drive to do better.

Its that old axe I'm always grinding, are you driven by the end result or your love of the craft. One is a short term game, the other is life long fulfilment.

Of course animation can and should be used to say things. But in a life of animating chances are you will only get a hand full of opportunities to work on things you really believe in. If they are going to be the only times you manage your best work then it makes for a pretty unfulfilled life imo.

Check this out, a gratuitous commercial project. But it is obvious the artist involved have seized the opportunity to make some beautiful traditional character animation. Finding a positive within the situation. Seeing things in black and white is a luxury for those on the sidelines, those in the game are manoeuvring around within the shades of grey, and consistently finding opportunities to improve their work, even creating opportunities.

Yes, nice traditional animation.

Thanks Ian.

I guess as a student, there is the opportunity to create one's own narrative project, or to use the time to research the jobs that may come at studios and animate toward that (e.g. walks and runs aimed at games animation).

Which path?

I guess it doesn't factor, if the goal is the "Joy of Animation", as Terry would put it.

The beauty, the art, the skill display being in the timing, spacing, arcs... the animation principle of 'Appeal'.

It takes a while to break the surface wrapping the craft.

The "wrapping" is important and worthy of attention. But it don't get the whole pie :)

Here is the thing...... the elephant in the room....... the thing I'm willing to shout out (from the comments section of a four day old post on this obscure blog ;)).

ITS OK TO BE AN ANIMATOR AND NOT BE A STORYTELLER OR DESIGNER! THE CRAFT OF ANIMATING IS WORTHY OF YOUR UNDEVIDED ATTENTION IF THAT IS THE BIT YOU ENJOY!

Gasp! There I said it. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . RUN!
